Frequently Asked Questions

What can private tuition help my child with?

I offer one-to-one tuition for a wide range of needs, whether your child needs help with specific concepts, homework support, short-term revision for a test or exam, or longer-term guidance to build confidence and make steady academic progress. My aim is not only to help children improve in their learning, but also to help them develop a more positive attitude to it.

What subjects do you tutor?

I mainly tutor core subjects, including Mathematics, English and Science. I can also help with other subjects on request, depending on your child’s age, needs and the type of support required.

Who is private tuition suitable for?

My tuition is suitable for children with a wide range of abilities and needs. Some families come to me because their child is struggling, while others want to stretch confidence, strengthen understanding or prepare for an important assessment. I provide a supportive, personalised approach designed around your child as an individual.

How do your online tutoring sessions work?

I specialise in online tuition, which means I can work with families wherever they are in the world. Sessions are delivered live, one to one, using Microsoft Teams, although I can also use Zoom if you prefer. Online learning allows me to provide flexible, focused support in the comfort of your child’s home.

What happens in the first few sessions?

I begin by getting to know your child and assessing their needs and current level of understanding, so that I can create a learning journey that is tailored to them. Early sessions focus on building trust and confidence, revisiting familiar material where helpful and introducing new concepts at the right pace. From there, I continue adapting the teaching to suit your child’s progress and learning style.

How long are your tutoring sessions?

My standard tutoring sessions last one hour. This gives enough time for focused teaching, engaging activities, progress tracking and personalised feedback, without making the session feel rushed. I can also offer shorter sessions on request, especially for younger children.

What equipment will my child need for online tuition?

Your child will need access to a laptop or desktop computer, a reliable internet connection and a webcam. Headphones can also be helpful for reducing distractions.

Can I sit with my child during the lesson?

Yes, of course. You are very welcome to sit alongside your child, especially if they are feeling nervous at the start. I simply ask that you observe rather than take an active part, so that your child can focus fully and begin to grow in confidence and independence.

How many tutoring sessions will my child need?

That depends on your child’s needs and goals, which I explore during the initial assessment. Some children understand a concept within a few sessions and then need a little more time to practise and secure it. Others benefit from more sustained support, whether for revision, confidence-building or longer-term progress.

Do you set homework between sessions?

I can do, if you would like me to. Practising between sessions can be very helpful in developing independent learning and reinforcing what we have covered. If homework is set, I will go through it with your child in the following session. For an additional charge, I can also mark and comment on work between sessions.

How do you track my child’s progress?

I include personalised tracking and feedback as part of my tuition service. I keep a close eye on how your child is responding, what they are finding easier, where they still need support and how their confidence is developing, so that teaching remains purposeful and tailored.

Do you offer written reports?

Yes. For an additional charge, I can prepare a personalised assessment report explaining your child’s strengths, areas of need and progress, together with recommendations. This can also be useful if you need something professional to share with school or other agencies.

Is online tuition safe?

Yes. I take safety, privacy and professionalism seriously. My service is built around secure video and storage technologies, and I use industry-strength encryption to help keep your child safe online. I am also criminal records checked and am happy to provide my certificate on request.

What experience and qualifications do you have?

I am a highly experienced UK-qualified teacher, SENDCo and tutor with 20+ years of UK and international teaching experience, and I also hold a Psychology degree. I bring specialist knowledge, empathy and a strong understanding of how children learn, alongside a genuine commitment to their wellbeing and progress.
