Frequently Asked Questions

What can SEND tuition help my child with?

SEND tuition can support both academic learning and the underlying skills needed to access that learning. This may include improving confidence, reducing anxiety around learning, developing focus, strengthening core skills in Maths or English, or helping your child engage more positively with education overall.

Do you work with children who have an EHCP?

Yes. If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), I will take this into account when planning and delivering sessions. This means that teaching is aligned with your child’s identified needs, outcomes and recommended approaches, while still being adapted in a way that works best for them in a one-to-one setting. EHCP support is included as part of my tuition and does not involve any additional cost.

Do you need a diagnosis to access SEND tuition?

No. A formal diagnosis is not required. Many children benefit from a more personalised, adapted approach, even without a specific label. I focus on understanding your child as an individual and tailoring support accordingly.

What types of needs do you support?

I work with a wide range of needs, including dyslexia, ADHD, GDD, autism and general learning differences, as well as children who experience low confidence, school-related anxiety (including EBSA) and difficulty engaging with learning.

How are SEND lessons different from regular tuition?

SEND lessons are more carefully adapted in pace, structure and delivery. Using my experience as a UK-qualified SENDCo, I employ a range of strategies depending on your child’s needs, such as breaking learning into smaller steps, using visual support, revisiting key ideas and allowing more time for processing. The focus is on making learning accessible and reducing pressure.

How do your online SEND sessions work?

Sessions are delivered live, one to one, usually via Microsoft Teams. Online learning allows me to provide consistent, focused support in a familiar environment, which can be especially helpful for children who feel anxious or overwhelmed.

What happens in the first few sessions?

Early sessions focus on building trust, understanding your child’s needs and creating a comfortable learning environment. I take time to observe how your child learns best, then gradually introduce tailored teaching approaches at a pace that feels manageable for them.

How long are your sessions?

My standard SEND tutoring sessions last one hour. Shorter sessions can be arranged where appropriate, particularly for younger children or where children struggle to maintain attention.

Can I sit with my child during the lesson?

Yes, you are very welcome to be present, especially at the beginning. I simply ask that you observe rather than lead, so your child can build confidence and independence over time.

How do you track progress?

Progress is monitored continuously, not just in academic terms but also in confidence, engagement and independence. I provide regular feedback so you can see how your child is developing over time.

Do you offer written reports?

Yes. I offer a detailed assessment report for an additional fee, outlining strengths, areas of need and recommendations. This can be helpful when communicating with schools or other professionals.

Is online SEND tuition suitable for my child?

In many cases, yes. Learning from home can be especially beneficial for children with additional needs, as it provides a familiar, comfortable environment where they feel safe and at ease. Without the pressures of a classroom, many children find it easier to focus, engage and build confidence. Sessions are adapted flexibly, allowing for a pace and structure that truly suits your child.

What experience and qualifications do you have?

I am a UK-qualified teacher and SENDCo with over 20 years of teaching experience in the UK and internationally. I also hold a Psychology degree, which supports my understanding of how children learn and develop.
